Around the world, LGBTIQ+ persons face harassment, violence and discrimination in life and in the workplace. There is a push from high income countries to include LGBTI+ in their development policies that operate in low-income countries (e.g. USaid’s LGBTQI+ Inclusive Development Policy). At the same time there is a backlash in East Africa over LGBTIQ+ inclusion and a shift to the harshest most discriminatory laws. In this session, we explore what can be learned from countries where there has been progress in this area and what strategies might work best.
